Little Merrand was born on August 14, 2018. At just six years old, she already carries a dream in her heart to become a teacher and help other children learn, grow, and build a better tomorrow.
Merrand is now in Primary Two. She’s a kind, gentle, and hopeful soul who lives with her single mother and two siblings. Their home is filled with love, but life is incredibly difficult.
Her mother, determined and hardworking, sells food by the roadside. On most days, she earns less than $1 — barely enough to cover even the basics like food, rent, and school fees. Still, she wakes up every morning and does everything she can to provide a better life for her children.
But despite her mother’s courage and sacrifice, Merrand’s education is at risk.
She is often sent home from school because there’s no money for tuition. When she does attend, it’s hard for her to concentrate, her stomach empty, her mind distracted by the uncertainty of whether she’ll be allowed back tomorrow. She watches other children eat lunch while she quietly goes without.
She still talks about standing in front of a classroom one day, holding chalk in her hand, helping children read and write, just like her teacher does now. Her eyes light up when she speaks about it. She wants to give other children what she is struggling to hold onto: the gift of education.
